Sources tell ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, that on the same day that Cowboys star WR Terrell Owens agreed to his new contract extension with the Cowboys, he was at a meeting with NFL officials about being placed into the NFL’s reasonable cause testing program, drug testing for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.
Mort reported that he was placed into the program because he missed a phone call to set up random drug test screenings. Any player that misses this phone call receives normal disciplinary action, but Owens had a plausible excuse. Owens can now be tested at random, with up to 24 screenings a year, if necessary, and this could last for the duration of his career, if the NFL sees fit.
Owens has never tested positive for any illegal substance.
