After a period where this year’s #3 overall pick in the NFL draft, Matt Ryan of the Falcons, received more money than last year’s #1 overall pick, JaMarcus Russell of the Raiders, the commish intends to put an end to that.

According to a published report by the Rocky Mountain News, Roger Goodell believes it’s “ridiculous” to give such big deals to such an unknown entity. He believes the money should go to the players who perform on a consistent basis, instead of players who’ve never played a down of football yet. Here’s a direct quote from the article:

“There’s something wrong about the system,” Goodell said Friday. “The money should go to people who perform.”

Goodell is being fair about it though. He prefers the option of re-negotiating a contract if/when a player proves themselves. The key, though, is getting the NFLPA to run with this idea, a task that could be mighty daunting.
