UPDATE: ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is reporting that Favre has ”an itch” to play has told Packers coach Mike McCarthy that he has thoughts about playing this year, so it appears this report has legs. Stay tuned!

____________

Right after Brett Favre announced his retirement, every media source under the sun speculated that Favre would play football in 2008, whether true or not. Well, today, that rumor’s floating around again.

Mike Lombardi, an NFL executive and personnel man for over 20 years, stated on his blog that he’s talked to a Packers player and was told that the legendary QB was giving “real consideration” to making a comeback. The player told Lombardi that even if the Packers don’t take him back, he’d play on another team, something he swore he’d never do. Green Bay owns his rights, though, as he was played on the reserve/retired list, so they’d have first dibs on him.

Green Bay would be hard pressed not to take Favre back, even if they’re willing to move on with Aaron Rodgers, who showed promise last year against the Cowboys when Favre was injured. If, by chance, they don’t take him back, teams like Miami, Minnesota, Kansas City, Oakland, possibly the Jets, would be lining up with contract offers. At this point, however, Favre is still retired and will remain that way for the time being, but it will be interesting to see if this report materializes.
