Two days after one QB retired, another has stepped away from the gridiron.
Former Superbowl champion QB Trent Dilfer has decided to retire today. He made this announcement today at a celebrity golf tournament in California and will make a formal announcement in the coming days. Dilfer has been a journeyman QB his entire career, beginning with the 49ers. After they cut him, the Ravens signed him in the 2000 off-season. That year he led, along with their dominant defense, the Ravens to the Superbowl and ended up defeating the Giants to earn his lone ring. In 2001, Dilfer signed with the Seahawks and backed up Matt Hasselbeck, seeing action when Hasselbeck went down due to injury. In March of 2005, Dilfer was traded to the Browns to be the starting QB. His stay in Cleveland didn’t last long, however, as in 2006, he was traded to the 49ers to backup and mentor Alex Smith. He saw limited action there.
Dilfer reportedly hurt his Achilles in a recent basketball game, and while he already had plans to retire, that just reinforced his decision. Dilfer finished his career with 20,518 career passing yards and 113 TD passes.
