While the above may not be a gang sign per se (nice call Cats), the NFL has hired a team of experts to study game tape to see if NFL players are throwing up gang signs during on-field celebrations. The NFL’s vice president of security, Milt Ahlerich, says there have been some suspected gestures of inappropriate hand signals, and while they jump on every instance immediately, the league wants to see how often this has occurred during games.
This issue has been magnified in the entire sports world when Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce was seen making a hand gesture toward the Atlanta Hawks bench during the NBA playoffs. Here’s some visual confirmation:

Pierce was fined $25,000 for that particular incident.
The NFL’s VP of officiating, Mike Pereira, who has been under heat in recent years for defending officials after controversial calls, seconds the investigation, saying that the NFL has “always been suspicious” and that Pierce’s display “brought it into light”.
