The Chicago Sun Times reports that the McCaskey family, who own the Bears, has given GM Jerry Angelo permission to use at least $25 million in up-front money to go out and land top-flight free agents. That includes Panthers DE Julius Peppers, who will test the market in hoping of land a deal that will pay him $12 million – $15 million annually.

That’s alot of coin for a 30-year old player, but the Bears need help on the defensive side of the ball. Take into account that they’re without first and second round draft picks this year, it leaves them with only one medium to acquire talent and that’s by spending money.

To clear up some room for the possible signing of Peppers (or another high-priced free agent), Chicago dumped a couple of vet players, including LT Orlando Pace.
