The NFL is a business. Part of the business is to replace the old, diminishing veterans for the young rookie talent. The latest case: The New York Jets.

Manish Mehta of NJ.com broke the story that the Jets have released left guard Alan Faneca. A formal announcement will “likely” come Monday.

The Jets had been reportedly shopping Faneca around for awhile now. When they found no interest, they did the next best thing by drafting his replacement.

Vladimir Ducasse from UMass was drafted with New York’s second-round draft pick (no. 61 overall). Ducasse is versatile; he can play tackle or guard. But he’s also raw, and looked to need a year on the bench to develop. Now it looks as if he’ll start at LG immediately following Faneca’s release.

Faneca was due $7.5 million from the Jets, a hefty price to pay for a player on the decline. His release will save the Jets $2 million this season.
