LB Adalius Thomas

Bill Belichick waited and waited, and finally cut loose one of his starting linebackers.

Adalius Thomas was released by the Patriots today; a move that’s been expected for months.

Thomas, who signed a $35 million deal with New England in 2007, has been disappointing in Belichick’s read-and-react 3-4 defense. He recorded only 34 tackles and three sacks last season while spending much of it in Belichick’s doghouse.

Now that Thomas is free to sign with any club, look for the Jets to make a serious push for him. Coach Rex Ryan was his defensive coordinator with the Ravens and knows how to use Thomas best: a rush linebacker; not too many responsibilities.

Even though New York recently signed Xerxes Jason Taylor as their pass rush extraordinaire, Ryan has long wanted Thomas on the Jets; the feeling is apparently mutual from A.T, too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rex has him wearing green & white by the end of the day.
