The Giants or the Jets: Which is “the other team”?

Brandon Jacobs has made it clear the Giants don’t take kindly to being referred to as “the other” New York team.

“We’ll never be the other team for the simple reason we have a Super Bowl ring. We didn’t stop the tour when we got there. We got past people we needed to get past. We beat teams that nobody beat and got what we wanted — Super Bowl XLII champions. The last time I checked my watch, no one else has done that in New York. We are that team in New York. You can put us behind if you want to. That’s fine. People got their opinions and like their team. But it is what it is.” – Brandon Jacobs

With three Super Bowl Championships for the franchise, most recently the epic win over the Patriots in February 2007, the Giants definitely have the upper hand when it comes to overall success.

The problem is, we live in a “what have you done for me lately” kind of world (and yes, I hope you get Janet’s song stuck in your head, like it is for me.) While 2007 isn’t that far in the past, the Giants began unraveling in week six of last season, losing eight of their final eleven games. The Jets went on to become Cinderella in the playoffs and the Giants ended their season with a 44-7 loss to the Vikings. Brett Favre passed for 316 yards and 4 TD’s against the Giants defense.

Right now it’s a popularity contest. Mark Sanchez is Mr. QG, Coach Ryan gives great headlines, and the Jets are an exciting franchise. The Giants need to do more than pass out 8×10 glossies of Tyree’s helmet catch. They need to win, and win convincingly.

The best thing the Giants can do is wave off the war of words and watch, and re-watch every single game from last season. They cannot repeat that performance again in 2010. I have a feeling this coming season is going to tighten the popularity contest right on up.
