Clinton Portis

One of the discussion points surrounding the Washington Redskins was the uncertainty at the running back position.

This offseason they’ve already signed Willie Parker and Larry Johnson to go along with the incumbent Clinton Portis, and could possibly still add Brian Westbrook to the mix.

The only question was deciding upon a starter, and now the decision is in.

According to Rick Maese, of the Washington Post, Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has named Portis the team’s starting running back heading into training camp.

It doesn’t mean much – a training camp battle is still expected – but it can give Portis the peace of mind he needs to compete.

LJ is likely a third-down back, and Willie Parker (if he survives the cuts) will probably contribute on specials to go along with a few carries here and there. Should Portis stay healthy, which is seemingly a tall task, I’m expecting him to get the lions share of the reps in 2010.
