Hate him or love him, no one, including myself, questions WR Wes Welker’s toughness and passion for the game.
Those two qualities were on demonstration today when Welker showed up in uniform to the Patriots OTAs, with a brace on his surgically repaired left knee, ready to dive into the workout. He reportedly joined in on pre-practice stretching and a high knee bag drill.
It’s pretty remarkable considering he had the surgery to correct a torn ACL and MCL just four months ago. Not to mention he’s also recovering from a torn rotator cuff.
It was almost a sure thing that Welker would start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, most likely causing him to miss the first few games, before returning to action. Now, there’s an outside shot he’ll be good to go by week one.
Obviously, this is a very encouraging sign for Welker and New England, but until he starts running, planting, cutting, and putting tension on that knee, he’s still on the shelf.
