Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins has fired the opening salvo against the Patriots today, as he is absent from the start of the team’s minicamp, according to the Miami Herald.
Mankins, an unsigned restricted free-agent, went off on the Pats yesterday over a contract dispute by refusing to sign his tender, vowing to skip training camp, and requesting to be traded.
He previously had until 11:59pm last night to sign his $3.268 tender. After rejecting to do so, New England withdrew the offer.
Frank Bauer, Mankins’ agent, did not issue a comment and the tight-lipped coach Bill Belichick declined to speak on the issue, saying he would only talk about the players who attended the practices.
Much like Darrelle Revis in New York, this could be the beginning of a long standoff between the player and front office.
