It’s not often that the defending Super Bowl champions cut a starting defensive player out of the blue in the middle of June.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints surprisingly have released defensive end Bobby McCray today. There have been reports of a roster bonus due soon that likely triggered this transaction.
McCray, who signed as a free-agent with New Orleans in 2008, started eight games in that time span, recording 59 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. When Charles Grant was lost for the season in 2009, McCray filled in and started all throughout the playoffs.
His salary wasn’t the only thing working against him, however. The team signed ex-Chicago Bear Alex Brown in early April as the replacement for one of the end spots opposite Will Smith.
McCray should latch on to another team’s roster, probably in a rotational role.
