Now here’s a story you don’t read about everyday. The president of a professional football team, not a player, or even a coach, was busted for driving after having one too many drinks.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Lions president Tom Lewand was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on Friday night. According to the paper, Lewand issued this apology:
“I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them,” Lewand said in a statement released by the team Saturday night. “As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again.”
It’s unclear if Lewand will be facing any punishment from the team, or the NFL. Should Detroit pass up the opportunity to take disciplinary action, commissioner Goodell will have a tough call to make. Though, he’s taking part in an “active recovery”, as he says, a precedent has been set with the players for driving drunk and some may feel such a high-ranking team official should be held to the same or, possibly, a higher standard.
Lewand has been with the Lions for 16 years, and took over for Matt Millen as team president in December of 2008.
