The saga continues in New York between the Jets and their All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, who can now be officially labeled a holdout.
Revis’ agent, Neil Schwartz, told ESPNNewYork’s Rich Cimini that his client won’t report to training camp until he gets that new deal. Revis already missed today’s conditioning test as the Jets opened training camp in Cortland, New York.
You can’t fault NY for not trying, though. According to general manager Mike Tannenbaum, the team has offered Revis both long-term and short-term contract offers; they were subsequently rejected by his camp. Tannenbaum has said he’s “disappointed” in Revis pulling a no-show.
Unsurprisingly, Schwartz downplayed the proposals:
“Darrelle’s actions speak volumes about the offers.”
If Revis continues holding out past August 10, he’d lose his guaranteed money over the remaining length of his contract and one credited year of free-agency. He’s threatened to do so all summer, so unless something gets worked out fast, this has the potential to last all the way up to the regular season and possibly beyond.
