According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bills general manager Buddy Nix announced that the team’s future plans don’t include linebacker Aaron Schobel and they will go on without the 32 year old.
It’s unknown if Schobel, who was contemplating retirement this offseason, will call it quits or if the team will trade him. The only thing Schefter made clear from “every indication” is that Schobel won’t play for Buffalo this season.
In nine seasons, Schobel has accumulated 78 sacks and 483 tackles for the Bills. He’s also been selected to the Pro Bowl twice (2006 & 2007).
UPDATE: NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Bills intend to release Schobel; as a free-agent he’s said to be “very much interested” in talking to other teams.
UPDATE 2: While Schobel’s short-list includes the Texans, the Bills aren’t releasing him so fast. Either he’ll come back and play for Buffalo (highly unlikely) or they’ll try to trade him and his $6 million salary.
“He will remain on our Reserve/Did Not Report list until he makes a decision about what he wants to do, whether it’s retire or if he might want to play somewhere else,” said Nix.
