They were close as of late last night, but the Texans and All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson finally got the new mega deal done.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Johnson signed a new two-year extension today that’s worth $23.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed. The two years were tacked onto the remaining five years of the eight-year deal he signed in 2007. In total, Johnson is now signed for seven years with a max value of $73.5 million.
He will average $10.5 million annually, which is more than Larry Fitzgerald (four years, $40 million) is making.
“This will make him a Texan for life,” Texans general manager Rick Smith said.
A.J. deserves it, too. Since being chosen third overall in the 2003 draft, he’s posted 587 receptions for 7,948 yards and 42 touchdowns. To go along with that, Johnson’s been selected to four Pro Bowls and has made first-team All-Pro twice. Oh, and he’s led the league in receiving yards in two consecutive seasons (2008, 2009.)
It’s safe to say he had this coming to him.
