The league’s reigning sack-leader from last season won’t get a chance to repeat in 2010.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil tore his pectoral muscle in yesterday’s practice and is out indefinitely. Dumervil will miss about four months, with the outside chance he could return late in the season.

He will get a second opinion on the injury so they can assess just exactly how much time he’ll be out.

Crushing blow to Denver’s defense. Dumervil led the NFL in sacks last year with 17, which was also a team record. In their defense, he is one of the most important players on the field; his absence will be felt regardless of the personnel they use to replace him.

Awful timing for the Broncos, too, as they rewarded Dumervil with a new five-year extension just two weeks ago. He’s set to make over $43 million in guarantees over the life of that deal.
