For a Patriots offensive line that’s already missing guard Logan Mankins — who requested a trade and skipped the start of minicamp this offseason — another blow could cripple the unit. Unfortunately, that other blow might have already occurred to Mankins’ backup.
According to an ESPN report, Nick Kaczur has a “significant” back injury that could cause him to miss a good chunk of time, and possibly the entire 2010 season. Though Kaczur could, and most likely will, seek a second opinion, the report calls his initial diagnosis “grim.”
The team has not commented on the matter.
If Kaczur is out for a significant amount of time, Dan Connolly (four career starts) and Ryan Wendell (zero career starts) would be in line to help fill the void at left guard. This might expedite talks between the Patriots and Mankins.
