New York Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff has signed a one-year extension through 2011, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork. Barring anything unexpected, Westhoff will retire following the 2011 season.
He has battled bone cancer in his left leg and underwent a 10-hour femur replacement procedure in 2008. The multitude of operations he’s had on the leg could be contributing to his decision to call it quits after next season.
The always fiery Westhoff, who is 62 years old, was hired by the Jets in 2001 and has widely been regarded as one of the best special team minds since entering the NFL some 25 years ago. In New York, his units have ranked at or near the top each season.
