And now for the out-of-left-field news of the day.

Matt Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, is reporting that 49ers running back Glen Coffee has surprisingly announced his retirement from football. No reason was given for the abrupt decision, only that he’s “moving on from football.”

UPDATE: Here’s a statement from Coffee (via Barrows):

this has been a tough decision for me, but at this time in my life I feel it’s best for me that I move on from football…I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future

Coffee missed practice on Thursday and was MIA today. Coach Mike Singletary was notified of his decision and called the second-year back an “exceptional young man.”

Last season, Coffee rushed for 226 yards and scored one touchdown. There is possibly more to this announcement, so stay tuned.

UPDATE 2: Coffee still hasn’t filed the necessary retirement paperwork with the league. Nevertheless, odds are he’s done playing football.
