Shawne Merriman

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chargers restricted free-agent linebacker Shawne Merriman has signed his one-year, $3.269 million tender.

Merriman had been staying away from camp, as he was trying to make his mind up whether to report or not. There shouldn’t have been much of a decision in the first place; he wasn’t going to get the long-term deal he’s seeking and skipping practices would’ve racked up daily fines.

Now that “Lights Out” is back with the team, he’ll have to fight off first-round pick Larry English for his starting job and prove he can revert back to his dominant form before the team hands him a new contract.

Next on the slate for general manager A.J. Smith? Getting his two other holdouts, WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill, to follow in Merriman’s footsteps by signing their tenders and reporting to camp. Good luck with that.
