One of the best tight ends in NFL history could be playing his last season before calling it quits.
In an exclusive interview with Alex Marvez, of FOX Sports, Tony Gonzalez says there is roughly a “50-50″ chance he hangs his cleats up at the end of the 2010 season.
“It is year to year,” Gonzalez said after a Monday practice at the Falcons’ headquarters. “I could play another three or four years. I know I could … There’s a lot of different factors. Yeah, I’d probably come back but you never know. I’m going to wait.”
Although he’s set numerous team (Chiefs) and NFL records — nevermind his ten Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro honors — Gonzalez has his sights set on one thing and one thing only: the Lombardi trophy.
“That’s the only thing driving me right now,” said Gonzalez, who hasn’t even won a playoff game since entering the league in 1997 with the Chiefs. “It’s not numbers. It’s not milestones. It’s not money. It’s not glory. It’s not going out trying to be famous and all that stuff. It’s one thing.
He’s expected to have a bigger role this season in an offense that features weapons at every position. He wants to improve on his impression 2009 campaign in which he hauled in 83 passes, totaling 867 yards, and scoring six touchdowns.
Gonzo’s got the stats and can look forward to being inducted into Canton when all is said and done. All that remains for him to put the cherry on top of an incredible 14-year career is a ring.
