The Broncos appear to be going all in with quarterback Kyle Orton this season.

Denver announced tonight that they’ve signed Orton to a one-year, $9 million extension that will run through the 2011 season. His total money over two years now climbs to over $12 million, including $5.5 million in guarantees.

Orton, who’s displayed good leadership skills and a solid grasp of Josh McDaniels’ offense, won’t have to look over his shoulder at the team’s other options — Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow — so he’s likely entrenched as the starter for the entire 2010 campaign.

“I really enjoy playing for the Denver Broncos as well as being part of this organization and this community,” Orton said in the statement. “This is the place that my wife and I definitely want to be. Considering the labor environment, I’m aware of how difficult it was to get this deal done and am extremely appreciative of all of the hard work and support from (general manager) Brian Xanders and Coach McDaniels during this process.”

There was some speculation that Tebow, the team’s first-round pick, might take over midway in the season if Orton should falter. Tebow might have to wait a couple of years to get his shot but will no doubt be a cog in the complex scheme that McDaniels likes to employ.
