According to an ESPN report, the New York Giants have signed offensive lineman Shawn Andrews to an undisclosed contract this morning.
Fellow offensive lineman Cliff Louis was the unlucky soul that was waived in order to make room for Andrews on the roster.
Andrews has been out of football since 2008 with back issues and was released by the Philadelphia Eagles, his new rival, in March of this year. Other than that, he’s a three-time Pro Bowler and former first-round pick.
“Our personnel staff has been monitoring Shawn’s progress for a while now,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “He looks great and had a very good workout for us yesterday. He can play both guard and both tackle positions. We just have to take him slow for the rest of the preseason to get him into game shape. Shawn is very excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the New York Giants.”
Big Blue’s line is beat up, especially the two starting guards. Chris Snee has missed time with a knee injury and Rich Seubert was out early in camp with a broken hand. If Andrews can return to his old form — he’s got age (27) and the credentials going for him — I wouldn’t be surprised to see him starting over Snee or Seubert at some point in the season.
