The AP is reporting that Buffalo Bills tight end Shawn Nelson has been suspended for four games by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The suspension, without pay, will begin on September 4 and will run until October 4.

He’s still eligible to play in the preseason games, but will have to avoid all contact with the team once the regular season rolls around.

Nelson was Buffalo’s fourth-round pick in 2009 and played in 12 games last season; catching 17 passes for 156 yards and one score. He was expected to play a larger role in coach Chan Gailey’s offense this season.

Jonathan Stupar is expected to man the starting position until Nelson gets back.
