On a day that was ripe with trades, cuts, and other major news, there is one more story that is dominating the headlines tonight. Wide receiver Randy Moss could be heading back to the team that he had so much success with in the past. And, no, I’m not talking about the Oakland Raiders.
Per FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, who’s two for two in breaking news today, the Patriots and Vikings are working on a trade that would send Moss to the Vikings. According to Glazer, the sides are still very much hammering out the details and the trade looks to be contingent on Minnesota agreeing to a new deal with Moss, who’s in the final year of his current deal.
The deal was at one time “very close” to getting done but has dragged on over the past couple of hours as the compensation is being worked out.
Although NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora conceded that this is not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination – as there are still “hurdles to clear” – he confirmed that there’s a legit chance that Moss could be wearing a Viking uniform soon enough.
How did it even come to this? You might remember a few weeks ago that Moss felt “slapped in the face” over the lack of a new contract, as he watched his quarterback cash in bigtime. Well, apparently, Moss showed up today to the Patriots facilities unhappy and “had words” with coach Bill Belichick.
Other rumors, which include this particular one by the Boston Herald’s Ian R. Rapoport, reveal that Moss’ discontent with the organization started way back after Week 1. Moss supposedly had his agent, Joel Segal, call and inform Belichick that his client is demanding a trade.
Obviously, we’ll be watching this story as it develops, so keep it right here for all of the latest updates.
UPDATE: There’s going to be a million of these rumored deals before one actually gets done, but local radio in Minneapolis passes along that the compensation could be a third-round pick and a conditional fourth-rounder.
UPDATE #2: Both ESPN’s John Clayton and Glazer say that talks could/should rage on throughout the night and would continue tomorrow morning.
UPDATE #3: And the last one for the night. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms a deal is close and tomorrow (Wednesday) is the target day. You already know what ESPN’s main topic will be for the next 12+ hours.
