JaMarcus Russell

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is off the hook.

According to ESPN, an Alabama grand jury has decided not to indict Russell on charges of drug possession, ending the case against possibly the biggest bust the NFL has ever seen.

Russell was arrested in July for possession of codeine, in which he mixed with another substance to create the popular “Purple Drank”. He did not have a prescription for the drug and was arrested during an undercover investigation on July 5.

Russell admitted to consuming codeine while apart of the Raiders organization in 2007 after the team spent its first overall draft selection on him. Three years and millions of wasted dollars later, Oakland chose to part ways with him and finally move on.

Although he said prior to the arrest that he doesn’t plan on playing in the AFL or CFL, the interest around the NFL has been nonexistent. That’s to be expected. No team, not even the one’s most desperate for a quarterback, will take a chance on a guy that showed absolutely nothing with the multiple opportunities he was handed. That’s not to mention being dumb enough to risk his career for a controlled substance like codeine.

It will be a long time before we see Russell in an NFL uniform again.
