Pierre Thomas

Running back Pierre Thomas might be on the shelf with an injured ankle, but he was nearly headed to Foxboro just a few weeks ago.

According to NewOrleans.com, the Saints and New England Patriots were negotiating a trade before the league’s October 19 deadline that would’ve sent Thomas to the Pats. In return, New Orleans asked for a cornerback but the deal fell apart when the Patriots additionally requested a draft pick.

With Reggie Bush (who’s set to return soon from a leg injury), Chris Ivory, Ladell Betts and Julius Jones on the roster, coach Sean Payton probably views Thomas as expendable. After all – much like Peyton Manning in Indianapolis – their offense will go as far as their quarterback, Drew Brees, takes them.

Thomas wanted a long-term extension prior to the season (who didn’t?), but that has no chance of happening now with this news leaking out.
