in Dallas Cowboys, Rumors & Speculation

Wade Phillips

Despite publicly stating that he’s sticking with his coach for the foreseeable future, that decision could be short-lived by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Rumors are swirling from multiple sources about a possible coaching in Dallas, as last night’s 45-7 loss to the Packers on primetime television might have pushed Jones over the edge.

NFL Network’s Albert Breer is reporting that Jones is meeting with the team’s coaches this afternoon, which is definitely not the usual protocol for the Monday following a game. The staff arrived back at HQ early this morning.

Then Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas noted that Phillips’s car isn’t in the usual reserved parking spot at the team’s Valley Ranch facilities. On top of that, Phillips has a press conference scheduled for 4 p.m. today with full media availability.

One more thing to note: Jones’ comments last night after the game. To say the least, he wasn’t pleased with the team’s performance (and who would be?)

“There are a lot of people here who are certainly going to suffer and suffer consequences. I’m talking about within the team — players, coaches who have got careers. I’ve got a lot of work to do, got a lot of decisions to make. And it’s not just one, two, three or four. There are several decisions. I think everybody in this country would agree that there’s a lot wrong with this team that we’ve got to address, and I’m certainly the one to address it.”

While all of this doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Phillips will be fired, these are major red flags and it’s all but guaranteed that the Cowboys will have a new coach roaming the sidelines in 2011. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is expected to get serious consideration as the successor.

We should know more as the day progresses, leading up to that press conference later this afternoon. Check back for updates on this situation.
