Favre Watch 2011 has started early.

On the same day that Brett Favre’s biggest off-the-field distraction, former coworker Jenn Sterger, finally spilled the beans to the NFL, Favre announced in an NFL Network interview that he won’t be back next season.

The interview, which was premiered before the channel’s first of their Thursday night games, is set to air in full on Sunday.

“That’s my goal,” said Favre, when asked by the NFL Network if the postseason was a possibility. “But I am thinking we have to win this game and that gives us hope for the next one.

“Small step right now.”

With the team’s disappointing season, coupled with the quarterback’s obvious problems off the field, this shouldn’t come as a shock. The Vikings are sure to have a new coach next season and, unless Favre gets to hand pick who he wants, chances are he won’t want to be apart of a totally new regime. Again, this is all assuming he doesn’t just retire for good; thrice and for all.

What we also know is that Favre is notorious for changing his mind, time and time and time again. His retirement wouldn’t be a surprise, but neither would another half-year long of waiting on him to make up his mind. This is probably the first of many reports to come on this front.

We’ll know speculate more on Sunday.
