The Vikings lost Adrian Peterson to an ankle injury for the majority of today’s 17-13 win over the Washington Redskins. Tomorrow, they’re expected to get a better idea of how much — if any — time the All-Pro running back is expected to miss.

According to ESPN 1500 Twin Cities, Peterson will have an MRI exam on Monday to determine how severe the injury is. Peterson was hurt in the second quarter when a Redskins defender landed square on the ankle, forcing him to hobble off of the field and onto the trainer’s table.

It looked as if Peterson would re-enter the game as he kept his uniform and pads on, even after halftime, but he just couldn’t overcome the pain after it “started to throb a little bit.”

“I would have tried to go out there,” said Peterson, who was off to a fast start with 70 combined yards on seven touches.

“Trust me, if I could have went, I would have been out there. But it was just unbearable.”

The training staff taped his ankle twice and had Peterson do all sorts of stretches but to no avail; he was done for the day. I don’t blame coach Leslie Frazier for withholding his franchise back and not risking further damage in a game that had no real implications for Minnesota.

Peterson’s replacement, rookie Toby Gerhart, filled in admirably as he accumulated 76 rushing yards along with his first NFL touchdown.

AP is one of the toughest players in the league so it would be a surprise if he missed next Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, although he couldĀ  be limited in practice this week. Check back tomorrow after the MRI results are in for a more definitive status.

Hope AD is all right, don’t want this to be anything serious. Even if he doesn’t play the Vikings still have Toby Gerhart who will just come on the field and will rack up a lot of yards and hopefully another touchdown. It’s too bad the playoff opportunity is officially out the door because they turned around so much in one game under a new head coach.
