Vikings quarterback Brett Favre made his 297th consecutive start today against the Buffalo Bills. His stay in the game didn’t last long, however, as he had to depart after just three plays.
On the team’s first series, Favre was blindsided by Bills linebacker Arthur Moats, resulting in a wobbly pass that was intercepted. The ball wasn’t the only thing that wobbled as the 41-year old quarterback slowly picked himself off of the Mall of America turf and headed to the sideline. The Vikings are officially calling it a shoulder injury.
He was replaced by his backup, Tarvaris Jackson. While Favre was being looked at by trainers, Jackson connected on a 46-yard bomb to receiver Sidney Rice on his first passing attempt, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Favre was seen up and about and it looked like he was going to re-enter the game before he headed to the locker room. His return is questionable.
While nothing else is currently known about Favre’s status, one has to wonder if that hard hit could send him into retirement. He’s dealt with a bevy of ailments all season long and this latest one could reinforce his decision that this season will be his last.
Again, that’s nothing but pure speculation, but that’s all we can do until more details emerge. Stay tuned.
UPDATE (4:30 pm EST): Coach Leslie Frazier talked to reporters after the game and confirmed that Favre is still the team’s starting quarterback and that he will undergo an MRI tomorrow. We’ll have the latest when the results are known.
