It looks like Brett Favre’s record-setting consecutive starts streak could come to an unceremonious end tonight.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting (via Ed Werder) that Favre and his teammates believe his sprained throwing shoulder will cause the streak to come to an end tonight as the Vikings take on the Giants at Detroit’s Ford Field.
Even pain-killing injections wouldn’t help the “severely swollen” shoulder as there is an abundance of nerves and arteries around the area of the injury.
Although it seems doubtful we’ll see #4 under center tonight, head coach Leslie Frazier texted NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora to confirm that nothing is set in stone and that a decision will be made before kickoff.
“No we have not ruled him out. We will make a decision at the stadium.”
Favre is one of the toughest players in the history of the game so there’s no doubt that he’ll do everything in his power to give it a go. It just looks like his age and the plethora of injuries he’s endured this year have caught up to him big time. Though, from a hardcore football fan’s point of view, it’s going to be weird to see the streak come to an end before our very eyes.
Tarvaris Jackson would get the start at quarterback in Favre’s place. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. EST.
UPDATE (6:00 PM): Favre is officially inactive, meaning his streak ends at 297 consecutive starts.
