In a turn straight out of left field, we might see Brett Favre in action tonight.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Vikings have upgraded Favre from out to questionable for tonight’s game against the division-leading Chicago Bears.
The plan is for Favre to start throwing 2 1/2 hours before the game, which should determine if he’s healthy enough to play. Favre had been dealing with pain in his sprained shoulder and numbness in his throwing hand, but felt a lot better today, so says the team’s head athletic trainer, Eric Sugarman.
“[Favre] woke up this morning feeling much improved. His symptoms and function have improved dramatically over the past 24 hours. In fairness to him and his team, he would like to be given the opportunity to play tonight if physically able.”
Rookie Joe Webb was slated to start as of last week’s report, but may have to take a backseat to the future Hall of Fame gunslinger if he’s well enough to be under center against the Bears’ ferocious pass rush.
Favre, who will likely retire for good after the season, knows this is his last chance to give Vikings’ fans one final farewell, even if the game is being held at TCF Bank Stadium — the home of the University of Minnesota.
Check back before gametime for more on Favre’s status.
UPDATE: Favre is officially active for the game and looked good, according to various media reports. The only downside for Minnesota is that running back Adrian Peterson was surprisingly declared inactive. Look for Toby Gerhart to get the start.
