For the first time in nearly a decade, the Carolina Panthers will have a new head coach next season.
Per NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora, the Panthers have decided that head coach John Fox — who’s in the final season of his contract — won’t be returning in 2011, ending Fox’s nine-year tenure in Carolina.
In addition to Fox, the contracts of defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson, along with the rest of the coaching staff, will not be renewed when the season comes to a close.
“I told John today that I appreciate everything he has done for us over the last nine years, but as happens in this business, it is time for both sides to move in different directions,” said Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson in a statement. “While we haven’t accomplished all of the goals we set as an organization when we signed him in 2002, we have certainly had our share of high moments – the Super Bowl, two NFC Championship games, and a division title in 2008. We wish John and his family the best going forward.”
Fox’s coaching record stands at 78-73 (including the playoffs). He will coach his final game when the team closes out its dreadful season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Despite his dismissal, Fox has enjoyed the opportunity he’s had.
“I appreciate the opportunity Mr. Richardson gave me to be a head coach in the National Football League nine years ago and to be a part of this organization,” said Fox. “I have formed many close relationships and I have many great memories. I particularly want to thank the players for their efforts throughout the years. Working with so many great people has been a rewarding experience.”
Although he lead them to a surprise Superbowl appearance in 2003, many Panthers’ fans have anxiously waited for this moment after years of subpar play and mediocre coaching. Most questioned Fox’s decision making, including the bizarre decision to repeatedly stick with quarterback Jake Delhomme for years before finally cutting ties this past offseason.
As for his successor, La Canfora suggests Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, who’s the hot name these days, Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, and Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Presumably, former Steelers coach Bill Cowher’s name will also be brought up because he has ties to the Carolina area.
