The Cowboys will have no need to search for a head coaching candidate in the offseason – they’ve already found Wade Phillips’ successor and he’s been testing the position out for the past seven weeks.
According to NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi, Dallas has removed the “interim” label from Jason Garrett, making him the team’s head coach going forward. An official announcement is expected within the next 24 hours.
The Cowboys have already satisfied the NFL’s Rooney Rule by interviewing receivers coach Ray Sherman, so all that remains is the final decision by owner Jerry Jones.
Garrett has led Dallas to a 4-3 record after taking over for Phillips, who went 1-7. Garrett, the former offensive coordinator, has his team playing hard in a lost season and will try to end this season on a high note. The Cowboys will take on the Eagles later today.
A popular candidate for several seasons, Garrett will finally get his shot as a permanent coach.
