It appears Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has moved one step closer to finally hanging ‘em up for good.

According to FOXSports.com, Favre officially filed the necessary retirement paperwork with the league today. Though Favre took the same measures in the early part of the 2009 offseason — and then subsequently returned to the NFL with the Vikings — this time it’s expected to stick.

And we can’t say we didn’t see this coming; from the November report that said he wasn’t going to return, to Favre confirming that “it’s time” after Week 17′s loss to the Lions, this just seemed inevitable.

Favre’s production and play fell off, to say the least, in 2010 after an incredible 2009 campaign. After throwing for over 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in ’09, Favre had just 2,509 passing yards 11 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions in ’10. It wasn’t just his poor choices under center that led to a dismal season — he also dealt with a bevy of injuries, which ended his record starting streak, and a season-long scandal between him and former coworker Jenn Sterger. He was eventually fined $50,000 by the NFL for the Sterger soap opera.

Now, the 41-year old will seemingly ride off into the sunset as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. While no one will put it past him to change his mind, this time it just seems like he’s genuinely done. As soon as the papers are filed, Favre will be up for Hall of Fame eligibility. He’ll likely be inducted on the first-ballot.
