The Philadelphia Eagles might not sign quarterback Michael Vick to a long-term deal (yet), but, at the very least, they’re going to ensure he’ll remain with the team for the 2011 season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles will place the franchise tag on Vick next month, keeping the Pro Bowler in Philly on a one-year contract.

Confirming what we already heard last November, as the team’s franchise player, Vick’s 2011 salary is based off the top five players at his position — he’ll net around $15.4 million. He pulled in $5.2 million in 2010.

The Eagles were never got to let Vick walk for nothing. He recorded career-highs in passing yards, completion percentage, and passer rating, while adding in 30 total touchdowns. A surefire lock for the league’s Comeback Player of the Year award, the organization will probably wait and see if he can duplicate his success for a second year in a row before doling out a huge extension.

Meanwhile, Vick’s backup, Kevin Kolb, doesn’t have the same job security. Once the team officially tags Vick, they’re expected to field trade offers for Kolb, who Schefter predicts will garner more interest than any other available QB.

Kolb is under contract through 2011, and holds a cap-figure of just $1.4 million. He was a hot commodity last offseason, but wound up staying with the Eagles and opened the season as the starter. This time around, Kolb has no shot at starting in his current situation, though there are a handful of teams that have a need at the position and could look to acquire the fifth-year man.
