Last August, a report claimed that former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress was about to be released from the Oneida Correctional Facility. The report turned out to be nothing more than a premature rumor and his request for early release was eventually denied.
Several months have passed since then and now the incarcerated hero of Super Bowl XLII knows the exact date of his release.
Per the New York Daily News, Burress is expected to be released from prison on June 6 — three months earlier than his original two-year sentence called for due to good behavior.
Burress has been holed up in prison since September of 2009, when he was convicted on gun charges after infamously shooting himself in a New York city nightclub during the 2008 season.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has already decided that he will be eligible to sign with any team when he’s finally let out. Turning 34 in August, Plax will battle age and rust should he latch on with another club.
Burress’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, claimed in November that two teams are still interested in Burress’ services. One of those teams could be the New York Jets, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported. If they lose Braylon Edwards in free agency, expect New York’s other inhabitants to give him a good, hard look.
Though, no matter who signs him, he likely won’t net much more than the veteran minimum, including incentives and possibly some sort of a behavioral clause.
