“He’s like an egg back there.”
Those were anonymous words once said about quarterback Chad Pennington from his former teammates on the New York Jets. After countless injuries — including his latest today — that infamous quote still rings true.
Per Yahoo! Sports, Pennington tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a pickup basketball game and will need corrective surgery.
According to his agent, Tom Condon, Pennington is scheduled to undergo the operation on April 7 at the hands of renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who has handled a majority of the 34-year-old’s previous surgeries.
An impending free-agent, Pennington is coming off a fourth major shoulder surgery after lasting just two plays in 2010. That’s after he worked diligently and went through extensive rehab to recover from a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 3 of the 2009 season. Suffice it to say, he’s one of the most snake-bitten players we’ve ever come across.
As evidenced during his playing career, Chad is not lacking in toughness, so it’d be a surprise if this setback caused him to step away from the gridiron and call it a career. Although his days as a starting quarterback are behind him, Pennington could still appeal to a team in need of a veteran presence when his ACL is fully healed.
