With his third run in with police in the last 16 months, Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt has joined the offseason’s ever-growing list of apprehended NFL talent.
According to Jay Glazer, of FOX Sports, Britt was arrested Tuesday in Bayonne, New Jersey after leading police on a car chase.
Britt was charged with eluding a police officer, lying to an officer/hindering apprehension and obstructing governmental function; all in all, a third-degree felony (eluding), and two misdemeanors.
Jerel Lord, a passenger in the vehicle, was also arrested and charged.
After an officer clocked Britt’s Porsche doing 71 mph in a 50-mph zone, he attempted to make a routine traffic stop. It was anything but routine, as they drove away faster and tried to elude police by weaving through highway traffic at high speeds.
Britt and Lord were eventually subdued after they left the car on a nearby roadway and started walking away. When questioned by police, Britt admitted to the car being his, but denied that he was the driver.
Released on summons, both Britt and Lord will likely pay a future visit to a New Jersey Superior Court.
Up to this point in his young career, it seems trouble just gravitates toward Britt. He’s had two other traffic related violations, took part in a fight at a nightclub last October, and recently had a charge of theft-by-deception reduced to a misdemeanor — all in three years time.
If this were a normal offseason, Britt would probably be reprimanded by the Titans for this latest mishap. But it’s anything but a normal offseason, and Tennessee can’t even speak to Britt, let alone punish him.
There is a chance the 22-year-old Britt will face a league suspension as commissioner Roger Goodell has vowed to hold players accountable for their actions during the downtime. There’s no telling when the lockout will end, so Britt doesn’t have to worry about being summoned to Goodell’s office just yet.
