It was nice while it lasted.

One day after the NFL reluctantly re-opened its doors for business — both figuratively and literally — they’re being closed once again.

According to USA Today, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis has granted the NFL’s request for a temporary stay on the ruling made by U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson this week.

The temporary decision is designed “to give the court sufficient opportunity to consider the merits” of a longer stay. The ruling was passed on a 2-1 vote by judges, who will be “briefed” by the owners and players next week.

Unfortunately, this means the lockout is back on — at least for the time being. Players won’t be allowed into team facilities, and can not speak to coaches. Earlier today, several players and coaches reported to their particular headquarters, but will have to leave the premises now.

Adam Schefter reported live on ESPN that a decision whether or not to lift the stay might not come until next Thursday.

The NFL, or commissioner Roger Goodell, has yet to comment on the announcement, which was made during round two of the 2011 Draft.

So, while things were looking up for a short while, this will send the league back into turmoil as the start of free agency and trades have been put on hold until further notice.
