When Peyton Manning isn’t putting his name down on antitrust lawsuits this offseason, he’s going under the knife.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Manning underwent surgery on Monday to correct a disc-related issue in his neck. The Colts’ All-World quarterback described the procedure as “minimally invasive” and expects to make “a quick recovery.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Manning returned to his Indianapolis home and began rehabilitation, “ensuring his readiness with regard to the resumption of any and all activities of the National Football League as scheduled.’’

“There is plenty of time for recovery,’’ he said. “We’ll formulate a plan moving forward.’’

This is the second such surgery he’s had on his neck in the last 15 months. In March of 2010, he had an operation done to relieve pain caused by a pinched nerve. Both procedures were done at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

While there’s no exact timetable for Manning’s recuperation, Colts president Jim Irsay says the four-time MVP will be sidelined from workouts for 6-8 weeks.

It’s never a good thing for a 35-year-old player to be operated on, but Manning’s work ethic is legendary. By the time training camp rolls around — if it does at all — this will be a non-issue.
