For the second time this year, wide receiver Santana Moss made it known that he prefers to remain with the burgundy and gold.

In a radio interview with ESPN 980 on Wednesday, Moss reiterated his desire to return to the Washington Redskins for the upcoming season. Although he didn’t say anything groundbreaking, Moss feels he “invested a lot into this team” and would “hate to leave.”

“That’s the only thing I can think of (returning). I’m a Redskin.”

Moss went on to say that he spoke with owner Daniel Snyder at the end of the season, and the feeling is the organization wants the 32-year-old back with the ‘Skins. In the same interview, Snyder revealed the decision will likely be left in the hands of coach Mike Shanahan.

Despite a mutual appreciation from both sides, the Redskins may not have a place for Moss, who’s scheduled to become a free agent once the lockout ends. After drafting three receivers in last month’s draft, there’s suddenly a logjam at the position.

Moss did have an excellent 2010 campaign, recording 93 catches for 1,115 yards and six touchdowns, but his skill-set is diminishing. He’s never been known to go over the middle and make the tough catch in traffic. Instead, he relies on speed to get down the field as a home run threat. If that’s what Washington wants, they got it in Leonard Hankerson, a third-round steal and an absolute speed-demon.

While the Redskins probably won’t hand Moss big money to return, a reasonable short-term deal seems like a good solution. For at least this season, Moss’ veteran leadership is a good quality to have rub off on a stable of young receivers as they begin to cut their teeth in the NFL.
