Literally one day after scoring a major victory in court, Kenny Britt was back in police custody.
What else is new?
According to ESPN, Britt was arrested in New Jersey on Wednesday night for obstructing the administration of the law, resisting arrest and tampering with or fabricating evidence.
As the story goes, Britt was at a Hoboken car wash when two local detectives smelled marijuana and suspected he was carrying a cigar full of it. After the detectives followed their noses, and decided to cuff the former Rutgers star, Britt tried to wrestle away from them and crushed the evidence in his hand.
Police did not recover the cigar, and released the Titans receiver on his own recognizance. He has a court date scheduled for June 16.
If it feels like we’ve been here before with Britt, it’s because we have. Several times. His rap sheet since entering the league is almost as long as his 6’3″ frame.
For his last incident, eluding a police officer, Britt appeared in a New Jersey court on Tuesday. He was fortunate enough to beat the felony charges, and escaped with just a single charge of careless driving, along with a small fine.
Britt’s new coach, Mike Munchak, seems less than thrilled with his actions.
“Unfortunately, he’s had a few things that’ve come up for him in the offseason,” Munchak said in video posted on the team’s website. “That’s something we’ll deal with when he comes in.”
Unfortunately for Munchak, he can’t formally speak with Britt, thanks to the lockout. If he could, maybe he’d help straighten things out, and nip this problem in the bud before it gets worse.
This latest issue isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but it’s common knowledge by now that commissioner Roger Goodell is logging all of the league’s arrests this offseason. He’s sure to notice somebody that for the life of them cannot stay out of handcuffs.
Even if Britt gets off easy — again — he’s still a candidate to be suspended once the work stoppage ends. For at least the time being, though, Britt needs to avoid Jersey at all costs.
