It may be unclear which team Reggie Bush will be playing for this upcoming season, but he’s likely well aware of his value around the league.
Three sources told Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole that New Orleans permitted Bush to talk to other teams earlier this offseason. The intent was to gauge the interest organizations might have in the former No. 2 overall pick.
At the same time, the Saints and Bush were in the process of working out a restructured contract, which obviously never materialized.
This all occurred in February, a month before the lockout went into effect, halting any and all league-wide business.
Apparently, Bush and his agent, Joel Segal, received a warm reception around the NFL as a “number of teams” were said to be interested in offering a lucrative deal (read: more than the Saints would offer) to Bush, who expects to be playing elsewhere in 2011.
Although Bush predictably shot down this report shortly after the news spread, it just might explain his questionable antics in the last few months.
Remember his now-infamous tweet following the team’s selection of Mark Ingram in April’s draft? That was viewed as major indictment on his future, and the writing might’ve been on the wall for him at that very moment. Not only that, but he also chose not to work out with his fellow teammates this offseason. Maybe he had an inkling that they won’t be his comrades for much longer.
Ingram, a typical work-horse back, looks to be the future in ‘Nawlins, and joined an already crowded backfield. Bush, who has not lived up to his draft status, more than likely will be the odd man out when the lockout is lifted.
So, assuming he’s done with the Saints, where might Reggie take his talents next? Cole lists the Dolphins, Steelers, Seahawks, and Giants as the likeliest destinations, with the Eagles as the darkhorse to land his services.
