When the Washington Redskins are able to, they will finally part ways with Albert Haynesworth after two failed seasons. And even though it’ll be the right decision, the ‘Skins will still be left with a void along their defensive line.

They’re going to seek a veteran body to plug that hole, and may turn to free agency to find the right man for the job.

A “person familiar with the situation” told the Washington Post that there’s a “mutual interest” between the Redskins and free agent defensive end Cullen Jenkins.

Jenkins, the younger brother of Kris, has been with the Green Bay Packers since 2003, when he was signed as an undrafted free agent. Over the years, Jenkins has been a diamond in the rough for the Pack, totaling 29 sacks in seven seasons (eight in 2010). He signed a four year, $16 million extension with Green Bay in 2007.

Now that his deal is up, and he’s proven himself to the rest of the league, he’ll be looking for a bigger payday. And he just might get it from Washington, an organization infamous for spending wildly in free agency.

The Redskins padded themselves a bit at the position in this year’s draft by taking defensive end Jarvis Jenkins in the second round and nose tackle Chris Neild in the seventh. Despite the youth movement, Washington wants an experienced player who can play both positions. Jenkins and the 49ers’ Aubrayo Franklin are two names reportedly atop their “wishlist.”

It’s hard to project how things will shake out once the free agent frenzy begins, but ultimately the Redskins may swap one 30-year-old DE for another.

As a Packer fan, I hate to see Jenkins leave, but who am I
to question Ted Thompson’s method of running a
football team.
