Plaxico Burress has found himself a new, yet familiar home in the Big Apple.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Burress has agreed to a one-year, $3.01 million contract with the Jets. The deal is fully guaranteed.
After visiting with his two former clubs — the Giants and Steelers — Plax was originally scheduled to visit with the Jets on Sunday. Reports later said he will not meet with Gang Green. Turns out that was all a smokescreen for a potential signing.
With the Jets, Burress will step into the starting position Braylon Edwards formerly held. Edwards, still up for grabs on the open market, will assuredly not return to New York.
Although he’ll be 34-years-old by the time the season rolls around — not to mention the fact he spent the last 18 months in prison — Plax is a target the Jets and quarterback Mark Sanchez highly value. He’s a big body with good redzone ability and sure hands. For a quarterback that can be erratic with his passes, this will be his safety blanket.
In other news, they don’t appear to be done just yet. Per the NY Daily News, Todd Heap is visiting with the Jets this morning, and was greeted at the airport last night by Rex Ryan, who gave the former Ravens tight end a bearhug.
New York has a need at tight end opposite Dustin Keller. This would be another cost-effective move that could pay dividends during the season.
