On Thursday, Packers president Mark Murphy told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that the team is aiming to retire Favre’s number within the next two years, when it is “meaningful” to Favre.

Or, in other words, Murphy wants to hold off awhile to dispel any residual feelings left between the fans, organization, and No. 4.

After all, “time heals all wounds” is more than just a cliche saying; it’s a fact of life, and applies to any breakup, on or off the gridiron.

It is refreshing to see the Packers want to let bygones be bygones, and honor arguably the greatest player to ever grace the illustrious Lambeau Field turf. Now it’s up to Brett to decide if the hatchet gets buried.

And to boost his stock some more, a certain (former) teammate with the Pack gave the 26-year-old a ringing endorsement.

Via SI.com’s Peter King, Aaron Rodgers asserts that Flynn is a “top-15″ quarterback in the NFL.

Aaron Rodgers on Matt Flynn:”The team that gets Matt is going to be very happy, I can promise you. They’ll be getting a top-15 quarterback.”

— Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) March 9, 2012

While it’s hardly a surprise that Rodgers thinks so highly of his fellow-signal caller and friend, it’s a stretch to say Flynn is already in the upper-echelon of the league.

Flynn’s only made two — count ‘em, two — career starts; one against a porous defense which had no tape on him, and the other in a meaningless regular-season finale.

Now, granted, he looked pretty good in both games, throwing for 480 yards and a staggering six touchdowns in his most notable accomplishment: A 45-41 win over the Lions this past January.

However, there are so many other proven quarterbacks that deserve to be ranked ahead of Flynn, a relative unknown, that it’s hard to justify Rodgers’ <del>Discount Double Check </del> assessment.

Flynn is certainly going to land a big-time contract as some team’s hopeful franchise QB — likely the Dolphins if they’re unable to land Manning. But he’ll need to back up the hype and praise by, at the very least, leading his next team to the postseason.

If he can’t, then .. well, at least we’ll know Rodgers’ passes are far more accurate than his prognostications.

As always, though, Green Bay’s brass found a way to get out of a sticky situation with a solution that’s amiable to both parties.

A league source tells ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Packers and Finley have agreed to terms on a two-year, $15 million contract, keeping the 24-year-old in Titletown through 2013.

Shortly after, he happily confirmed the news on Twitter.

It’s TRUE! Thank you so much to the Packers organization, all of my fans, and my beautiful wife. Happy Bday. Let’s GO Packers!! Back soon…

— Jermichael Finley (@JermichaelF88) February 23, 2012

I could not be happier to have the privilege of being a Packer for the next 2 yrs. Glad to be back with my team & coaches for 1 common goal

— Jermichael Finley (@JermichaelF88) February 23, 2012

Finley, the team’s third-round pick in 2008, set career highs last season, posting 767 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Impressive numbers considering Aaron Rodgers likes to spread the ball around, utilizing his many capable targets.

Now that Finley’s contractual situation is satisfied (albeit temporarily), next up on the club’s offseason docket is figuring out what to do with free agent quarterback Matt Flynn; tag him for a staggering $14.5 million (and hope a trade partner can be found) or let him walk for nothing?

Hope they have Advil handy.

However, the 37-year-old is willing to do whatever it takes to remain with the only team he’s known in his professional career.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Driver told WISN-TV that he’s willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Packers, saying money won’t define his “legacy.”

“The organization knows what I’ve done on and off the field, and they want to keep me around as long as possible,” said Driver, WISN-TV reported. “If that means sitting down and taking pay cuts to stay around, then you take pay cuts to stay around. I’ve always said it’s not about the money for me anymore.

“What I’m pushing for is for my legacy to stay around in the state of Wisconsin and around the world forever. So the money’s not a big issue.”

Driver, whose already set franchise records for career receptions and receiving yards, finished the 2011 season with just 37 catches for 445 yards, his lowest total since 2001.

Due to collect nearly $5 million this year, Green Bay may opt to save the cash and move on from a player that could on his last legs.

The numbers game — and I’m not referring to his age — is also working against him. The Packers are stocked at the receiver position, highlighted by the emergence of Jordy Nelson as quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘ go-to target. Even in a spread-the-wealth system, Rodgers rarely looked Driver’s way last season.

With three more wins, they’ll repeat as NFL champs, something that hasn’t occurred since the Patriots’ glory days.

Even if the team never won another game, however, Green Bay’s longtime receiver, Greg Jennings, still can make a bold determination — Aaron Rodgers is better than Brett Favre.

Comparing the two quarterbacks on ESPN New York 1050 Sunday, Jennings stated that he’d “definitely” take Rodgers over Favre, mostly due to the All-Pro’s “un-paralleled” work ethic and preparation to the game.

“They both bring different things to the table, but honestly right now I definitely have to go with … Aaron, his body of work at such a young age, his attention to detail, his discipline, I think it’s really second to none — its un-paralleled,” Jennings told ESPN New York 1050 on Sunday when asked which player he thought was the better quarterback.

Jennings continued to gush about the league’s MVP front-runner, saying what Rodgers is doing this season is pretty unprecedented.

“You haven’t really found a QB that has done it the way (Rodgers) has done it,” Jennings told ESPN 1050. “I mean you have the young guys that are coming out and they’re making a huge impact in this game … but his attention to detail and his discipline to be perfect or so close to perfect I think that’s really going to separate himself … his study habits are … they speak volume for themselves.”

If there’s anyone who knows what’s what, it’s Jennings, having played extensively with both gunslingers in his six-year career.

Though, it’s not a surprise who he favors. With Rodgers, Jennings hauled in 193 more receptions, recorded 3,067 more yards, and scored 19 more touchdowns than he did with Favre tossing him the ball.

In a general sense, you could say he has more use for the Discount Double Check than he does a pair of Wrangler jeans.

During the Packers’ Super Bowl run a season ago, the best word to describe their success was “improbable.”

This year, with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and a chance to repeat, the word being tossed around — at least in Sin City — is “expected.”

Per the Associated Press, oddsmakers at Las Vegas casinos have tabbed Green Bay as the best bet to win Super Bowl XLVI in February.

At Cantor Gaming, the Pack are currently 9-5 favorites to take home their second-consecutive Lombardi Trophy, despite questions surrounding their defense.

“Offense seems to rule the day right now in the NFL, but I’m not sure that defense will be able to hold up long enough to win it all,” Cantor Race & Sports Director Mike Colbert said.

As a basis for comparison — and because they’re the talk of the country — Tim Tebow and the Broncos are 120-1 underdogs to win the title, and are even a longshot to advance past the Steelers in the Wild Card round.

Other notable odds include: 49ers (12-1), Giants (20-1), and Patriots, who’ve been given an 18% shot of winning it all, according to sports gambling expert RJ Bell. For the record, Bell has the Packers at 32%.

“That, to me is the story: Not how prohibitive of a favorite they are, but the fact that they’re being given less than a one in three chance,” Bell said. “The Patriots and Saints combined have a better chance than the Packers.”

After reading this, be sure to call your bookies and hedge those bets. It looks like BoDog’s early prognostication was right on the money — literally.

It’s a moniker that carries more weight than most, considering the popularity of the sport among the country.

Now, technically, it would be incorrect to refer to Dallas as such — another team has claimed the title.

In a survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, 22% of the 700 voters said the Packers are their favorite team in the NFL. The Cowboys followed behind, receiving 11% of the vote.

Other popular choices included the Bears, Giants, and Steelers, each totaling 8%.

In fact, Big D’s fall from grace was particularly steep, as 22% of the voters named the Cowboys as their least favorite NFL team.

As for the Pack, it was a good day to be a member of the organization. Earlier, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was chosen as the AP Male Athlete of the Year.

After an MVP performance in the Super Bowl and a 13-0 run to begin the season, is it really a surprise that Aaron Rodgers unanimously took home another prestigious award?

I think not.

On Wednesday, Rodgers was named the Associated Press 2011 Male Athlete of the Year.

The Packers quarterback received 112 votes out of 212 ballots, beating out Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who finished second with 50 tallies.

The other nominees spanned the entire sports spectrum — tennis sensation Novak Djokovic, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.

Rodgers is arguably the clear-cut candidate for MVP of the 2011 season, as he’s passed for over 4,300 yards and 40 touchdowns with two games to go. If he can lead the Pack to another Lombardi Trophy, we may see his name atop the AP ballot next year, too.
